This book came highly recommended and I did enjoy reading it. But part of me just doesn't believe we have all that much power as parents. This book seems to suggest that if we parent well, our kids will turn out just fine. If they're not fine, it's because we weren't thoughtful enough. If you believe this theory, you'll love this book. But I think genetics has a lot to do with the way people's kids turn out, more than this book suggests.

Millenials
Most of this book is common sense and probably good advice but I don't think that worrying about being good parents and reading books about how to do it and then using the strategies religiously produces stronger or more decent adults. The baby boomers have been these helicopter parents, and if you ask me, their kids are spoiled, incredibly entitled, and (from what I read and hear) pretty hopeless workers. We should obsess less about being good parents and focus more on our families and communities as a whole.

what about just being a dad
Well, if my father would have read a book like this, maybe he would have thought first before yelling sometimes and maybe actually given me the feeling that he was actually interested in how I felt and thought. It's not all about how the kids turn out. If you ask me the big deal is, the experience of being a father when your kids growing up and giving your kids a lot of love and the best parenting you can, so they have a good experience being a child and you give them what you can to get them ready as they grow up. And, the dad gets something out of that too, doesn't he? No you can't control how things turn out but you can do your best at parenting when it counts.
